Wellness Coach vs. Life Coach

Understanding the difference so you can choose the right support for your goals.

What is a wellness coach?

A wellness coach is a trained partner who helps you turn intentions into daily action. Rather than telling you what to do, a wellness coach helps you discover the small, consistent habits that fit your actual life — around nutrition, movement, sleep, stress, and overall lifestyle. The goal is not a quick fix; it is lasting behavior change that supports your whole self.

According to the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC), health and wellness coaches use evidence-based, person-centered conversations to support clients in achieving self-determined health goals. The relationship is collaborative, respectful of your autonomy, and focused on what works for you.

What is a life coach?

A life coach helps individuals identify personal or professional goals and create a path forward. Life coaching may address relationships, career changes, confidence, productivity, or major life transitions. The focus is often broader than health and may center on mindset, motivation, and personal fulfillment.

WebMD describes life coaching as a partnership that helps you clarify what you want and build a plan to get there. A life coach can be especially helpful when you feel stuck, need accountability, or want to make a meaningful change in a specific area of life.

Can they overlap?

Yes. Many wellness coaches bring coaching skills that look similar to life coaching — asking powerful questions, exploring values, and supporting accountability. The difference is that a wellness coach always ties those conversations back to your health and daily habits. A life coach, meanwhile, may touch on wellness but does not necessarily specialize in evidence-based lifestyle or health behavior change.

If you are looking for someone who can help you improve sleep, build a movement routine, manage stress, or create sustainable nutrition habits while also supporting your motivation and mindset, a wellness coach is likely the better fit.

Which one is right for you?

Choose a wellness coach if your goals are rooted in physical health, daily habits, and sustainable lifestyle change. Choose a life coach if you are primarily seeking clarity, direction, or support around a personal, professional, or relational goal. In some cases, people work with both at different seasons of life.
